In track and field, the 2024 season brought a lot of newer talents to the limelight of the community. This list included Quincy Wilson, who was 16 years old back then and even secured his career-first Olympic gold in the same campaign. After many months, he made his return to track and secured a few great feats. However, his first race of 2025 didn’t go as planned, as in the Virginia Showcase, he had to settle for a second-place finish in the 500m.
Indeed, this particular performance from the 17-year-old left the community confused. No one thought that Wilson would start 2025 with a loss, as there were plenty of predictions on social media right before the race. However, a specific track and field legend candidly shared his thoughts about the situation, citing the hype surrounding the event.

So who is this track and field legend? Michael Johnson has always been critical of the sport, even if he adores it because of the glorious career he had during his professional days. He is never shy to point out the problems in track and field like pay issues and visibility of the sport and has always contributed towards the betterment of the industry. The way Quincy Wilson generated hype coming to the 2025 season is something that the owner of Grand Slam Track is aware of, but he had a certain question for the fans of the sport.
Taking to X, Johnson went candid, stating, “Is it me or does it seem every track performance is marked with🔥? Are they all really🔥?” The 57-year-old defies the stereotype of being in a different generation, so he might be lacking behind the trends. Nope, he is aware of everything, and whatever is happening on social media in particular. Every time he looks at any track performance, he always sees people over-hyping it, and that made him raise this particular question.
So what’s the point of hyping up? Indeed, it attracts a lot of audiences and raises expectations in the community. However, this particular scene could result in two outcomes. In the first scenario, the athlete meets the set expectations, thereby enhancing positive community discussion. The second being is exactly the opposite, where the athlete doesn’t live up to the expectations and then becomes a fading memory in the public’s eye.

Johnson understands that to keep the community engaged, the hype must be generated, but still, according to him, it should be limited. Over-hyping will just cause the sport to lose more viewership; if expectations are not matched, the fans will drift away because they didn’t get to see what they wanted in the particular track meet. Indeed, Wilson has found himself in a similar situation after his loss at the Virginia Showcase, and his track rival is already looking forward to many other opportunities.
Honest confession by Quincy Wilson’s rival
Going into the 500m race in the Virginia Showcase, Quincy Wilson was a fan favorite. However, Andrew Salvodon from Bayside High School not only secured the top step of the podium but also broke a national record by defeating Quincy Wilson. Indeed, Salvodon clocked a blistering 1:00.49 and crossed the finish line first, followed by Wilson in second with a time of 1:02.49.

A two-second gap is just terrifying, but it gave a lot of confidence to Salvodon, who shared his thoughts following the victory, stating, “Well, this used to be his own turf. It’s mine now. I’ve been training on it, I’ve been doing everything I could on this, on Virginia. So, I mean, home turf or home court, whatever you want to call it, it feels good to beat an Olympian. Never thought I’d race one until college or after that. But overall, everything that comes with this is amazing. I’m proud to have it.”
Indeed, the 17-year-old just beat an Olympian and was almost about to crush that sub-60, which is just a blistering pace when it comes to 500m races. The future is bright not only for Salvodon but also for Team USA, as these talents will emerge in the elite scene in a few years.
