The World Athletics Award 2023 took place on the 11th of December 2023. All the athletes were absolutely girded up, but it didn’t go as expected for the athletes. The World Athletics brought a change in the distribution of the awards which was looked down upon by many entities in the track community. Lyles took to his X account releasing the thoughts about the same after 3 days of receiving the award. He expressed, “I believe I found the right words for what happened at the AOY awards”. He further added that the decision made by the World Athletics to split the award without informing the athletes did not feel justified. Lyles expressed, “It made me feel that none of our achievements were good enough to be AOY”. He also advocated for the intentions of World Athletics by stating, “I’m guessing that was not WA’s goal but that is how it made me feel”. However, with this, he also added some of his insights on the amendments that the World Athletics should execute.
