The Paris Olympics has provided sports athletes worldwide with major recognition and an immersive experience for the winners. But in the case of Nigerian sprinter Tobi Amusan, the prominence comes differently. With no Olympic medal or win, her prominence comes from the 12.12 seconds world record set in the 2022 World Athletics Championship.

Tobi Amusan, the first world champion of Nigeria, donning the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth and African titles, comes majorly in the 100-meter hurdles event. Three consecutive gold medal wins in the Diamond League were added, along with the recent win at the 23rd African Championship in Douala in the women’s 4×100 meter relay, making her stand out without any Olympic championship win. However, the Nigerian sprinter with recognized accolades in hand has now come to shift her base from Nigeria, carrying relevance from major track and field personality Usain Bolt.

Claiming the ninth spot at the Paris Olympics, Tobi Amusan has been under the Nigerian roof for a long time. Leaving behind her native land, from where she started her professional career, the Nigerian sprinter is now finding shelter in a place where we have one of the major sprinters of all time, Usain Bolt. The Nigerian sprinter makes a major decision in his career with the shift to Jamaica in preparation and training for the upcoming 2025 season.

Training since September, the sprinter’s decision comes in similarity to sprinting legend Usain Bolt’s career decision during his college years to continue representing as a Jamaican star rather than accepting offers from the United States. It was indeed something worth the decision that made him a track and field player today. Now it comes to the Nigerian sprinter to continue forward with a yet major career decision holding the same aspirations to gather as the legend.

Tobi training under Glen Mills

With her major professional career spent training with Lacena Golding-Clarke, a former national sprinter hurdler, Tobi Amusan gained prominence with positive results reflected in major career achievements during her mentorship. The Commonwealth Games of 2018 and 2022, won under her guidance, were, however, indeed a successful partnership between the two, but now it doesn’t last anymore.

Changing directions, Tobi Amusan is now ready for the 2025 season with a new mentor, this time training out her skills on the field—the training under legendary coach and the Racers Track Club President Glen Mills. The two have been busy training since September in preparation for the two in a new environment. Only the next championship or competition could showcase the true potential of their hard work.

Glen Mills played a major role in shaping Bolt’s career since his freshman days in 2005. Recognizing his true potential and passion, their partnership ignited to new heights with several achievements gained. While Mills’ vision to see Bolt as the 400-meter’s greatest runner was gained, Bolt’s second-fastest 100-meter record of 9.76 seconds of all time was, however, a big statement and a revert of the skills and ability the Jamaican sprinter carried. As Mills himself once stated, “In terms of ability, Usain has the most of any athlete I have ever coached and probably have ever seen.”
