Gabby Thomas truly lives up to the title of “Superwoman”! Balancing academics and track and field demands is no easy task. But she does it effortlessly. And she even went on to dominate at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She ended her campaign with three golds. This includes the 200-meter event and the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.
But what’s even more amazing is that, back in high school, she was battling imposter syndrome and a tumor. But did that stop her? It sure did not. And now, after two Olympics and five Olympic medals later, Gabby is ready to move on from track to her next big adventure plans!
As it happens, Gabby was spotted running to one of her favorite spots, Cava, on the morning of 13th January. As part of her post-workout refuel, she dug into a delicious meal. It included saffron rice, black lentils, traditional hummus, crazy feta, half falafel, half-roasted veggies, cucumber, cabbage slaw, pickled onions, romaine, pita crisps, etc.

But the real story happened on her way there. As Gabby jogged toward Cava, Kate Macks managed to catch up with her for a quick interview. Between strides, Kate asked about Gabby’s plans after retiring from the track. And Gabby shared that she’s already got everything lined up.
Gabby Thomas replied, “I currently volunteer in a healthcare clinic in Austin, Texas. And it provides healthcare to people who otherwise wouldn’t have access to it—some people who don’t have health insurance and receive primary healthcare.” She explained, “When I retire, I’d love to stay in that space, whether that’s working in hospitals, running a hospital, or staying in the nonprofit space.”

Thomas has a bachelor’s degree in neurobiology and global health, which she obtained from Harvard University. She also has a Master’s degree in epidemiology from the University of Texas. As she puts it, “I love doing both things, so I prioritize them and make time for them.” That balance is what has helped her to excel in both fields. And it is something she has had for a while now. Last year on the Set and Pace podcast, she discussed how even before she started her athletic career, Gabby had plans for her future in healthcare.
“Before I became a professional athlete, I wanted to go into healthcare, into the nonprofit space. And one day run my own hospital and address health disparities,” she shared. Gabby has always been clear about what she hopes to do with her status. “I have a really strong foundation in that and that’s why I wanted to pursue neurobiology as my major,” she explained.
“Having that deep understanding of it has really helped me in my track career because I understand what it takes to get to this level.” Just like she balances between being a student and a sportsperson, Gabby has shown just how dedicated she is towards bringing real change, whether on the racetrack or a hospital. Most of the above-stated values of hard work and sharing were principles that were imparted to her by her mother.
From her mother’s example, Gabby Thomas found the strength to conquer the track and beyond
Gabby Thomas, just like many of us, grew up watching her mom, Jennifer. And she couldn’t help but wonder, How does she do it all? Growing up, Gabby witnessed her own mother working tirelessly. That too, with two kids to look after and a dream to pursue. Jennifer was not just any ordinary mother. She was a go-getter. Gabby would sit and see Jennifer working as a waitress, all while pursuing a PhD. And that’s how Gabby’s mom got her job as a professor at the University of Michigan. Gabby understood right from a young age that you don’t just discuss hard work but rather you demonstrate this in practice.

When it comes to track and field, Gabby didn’t consider herself the top athlete in her early career due to imposter syndrome. But she started working hard and hard to be the best among all. “I was the first one at the track and the last one to leave,” she said. She knew how her mom used to work hard, and she did the same. And when the big moments, like the Olympics, arrived, she was ready.

Now, Gabby is thinking of the future, and her plan is not just focused on earning more medals, but on giving back to society. She is ready to use her platform to make a real difference.
