With the dawn of the first sun of the year 2024, another great NCAA season was promulgated under the awning of the greatest elite running programs in the country. The Arkansas Razorbacks track and field team has kept the sprinting fans enthralled for decades. These runners are slated to decorate themselves with ornate hardware at the 2024 NCAA Division I Track and Field Championship scheduled for June 5. Before the Razorbacks add to their dominion, one cannot help but wonder how this dynasty was forged.

The Arkansas Razorbacks owe their supercilious stature in collegiate track and field to one legendary coach. John McDonnell paved the way for the team to win 49 national track and field and cross-country titles during his tenure. Fast forward to 2024, and although the Razorback team has experienced a dip in rankings, the prognosis suggests they are poised for a triumphant revival.

FloTrack compiled a list of the top-ranking NCAA track and field teams in 2023. With 54 points earned, the Arkansas Razorbacks were playing second fiddle to the most dominant Texas Tech rivals. The team gained more nemeses in the women’s division, where Texas and Florida occupied the top two ranks on the leaderboard. However, the preseason Bowerman watch list has primed Arkansas Razorbacks fans for an exciting 2024 NCAA season. This hype is in recognition of three jumpers from the Razorback track and field team, who had a glorious season last year. Arkansas Razorbacks Track & Field and Cross Country made a celebratory announcement on their Facebook page with edited pictures of Romaine Beckford, Jaydon Hibbert, and Wayne Pinnock.

Captioned, “We see a lot of Razorbacks on the Bowerman preseason watchlist,” the post provided a teaser into the Razorback’s mindset going into the next NCAA season. The trio of senior, sophomore, and junior have won six NCAA titles combined and added 73 points to the team’s tally in the 2022-23 season. Notably, Beckford, Hibbert, and Pinnock earned Bowerman nominations for their stellar performances.

Razorbacks dominance resurfaces with three Bowerman watch list inductions

The senior Beckford won the high jump title at the 2023 Jamaica Championships, but his most incredible moment of glory awaited in South Florida. The double NCAA high jump champion achieved career-best marks in 2023, clearing 7-5.25 outdoors and 7-5 indoors. While at Florida, Beckford also won the 2023 AAC Indoor Field Most Outstanding Performance. Surprisingly, sophomore Jaydon Hibbert, who turns 19 in a week, had a more exemplary victory story to relay. Hibbert had lived up to the Bowerman predictions from last preseason by clinching two NCAA triple jump titles and setting a world-leading mark of 58-7.5 outdoors. He also broke records dating back to 1982 and 1985 and secured the NCAA title with a record-breaking jump of 57-6.5 in the indoor event.

Junior Wayne Pinnock became the 2023 World Athletics Championships long jump silver medalist. His season-leading mark of 28-0.25 (8.54) in Budapest speaks volumes about his prowess. He also clinched NCAA long jump titles as a freshman in 2022. Arkansas Razorbacks is the only collegiate track and field program to have three athletes on the preseason watch list. While it may seem odd to the uninitiated, those aware of the program’s track record will not question such an accomplishment.
