Conducting and organizing a sporting event is a grueling and difficult task. Things become more challenging when the play area spills outside stadiums and arenas and into the cityscapes. A similar difficulty was noticed in the recent 2023 New York City marathon event.
While athletes were participating in the men?s 5000-meter national championship, a big bus suddenly trespassed onto the racecourse. A social media post caught the event?s winner recalling and describing the near-fatal event. In fact, the prominent athlete said that things could?ve easily gotten out of hand.

As the Men’s 5k marathon race was underway on the tracks of New York, a bus suddenly penetrated the restricted pathway reserved for the racing course for the distance running. To make matters even worse, the bus trespassed onto the course right when the athletes were passing that junction. Citius Mag tweeted the video of the winner of the event, Morgan Beadlescomb, recounting the almost tragic occurrence.
Captioning the post, Citius Mag penned, “Scary moment during the Dash To The Finish 5k today with a bus coming dangerously close to the men’s lead pack.” The American marathon athlete said that this was something unexpected and the responsible people must be held accountable. He said, ?That could?ve killed somebody??as he mentioned the shocking incident that jeopardized the safety of all runners.?
Videos of the track and field mishap are currently running rampant on the internet, as everyone gasps in shock. While all athletes continued the race unscathed, things could have easily gone wrong in such a situation.

Although this incident involved an inattentive bus driver, there was an instance in 2016 when a spectator breached the marathon barriers on purpose.

The 2016 London Marathon witnessed a slightly disturbing as well as a heroic moment in world marathon history. Jemima Sumgong of Kenya was charging onto the course when a man dressed in black with a cap trespassed on the racing route. The man started to run alongside Sumgong, clapping his hands as the Kenyan continued her run.
A security marshal later intercepted the man and escorted him off the course. Despite this momentary distraction, Sumgong continued her unstoppable run. After all, she had just recovered from a vicious mid-race fall after colliding with a fellow competitor. Despite this, the Kenyan sprinter continued her run.

The world witnessed the iconic marathon runner cross the finishing line in first place despite her fall. In fact, she also beat Tigist Tufa, the 2015 champion, by a flashing five seconds. Her victory marked one of the rare instances when a fallen runner made a staunch comeback. While the unruly spectator may have tried to steal her shine, Sumgong?s resilience overpowered everything else.
