Home/Track & Field

The Middle East is once again embroiled in conflict as tensions are rising between Israel and Gaza. If this escalation continues into a full-blown war, many citizens will be displaced from their homes and live the hard life of a refugee. A similar thing happened with a promising Syrian track and field athlete 12 years ago who has now risen to World Athletics Championship fame.

Mohammad Amin Alsalami has been living in Germany for the last decade since losing his home in Syria. He was a talented athlete in his home country and won many national competitions during his school days. Now, as an adult, he continues to earn accolades, achievements that once would have been credited to Syria. With one leg already extended towards the 2024 Paris Olympics, he is finally ready to tell his harrowing tale of survival.

In an interview with Olympics.com, he said, “I could not practice [in Syria] without interruptions?I had to deal with a war. I fled; I suffered a big injury. There were some breaks [in my training]”. He did not allow this terrible fate to dictate his life, but took the reins into his own hands.

In a brilliant example of resilience and determination, the talented athlete never gave up on his dreams. The 29-year-old now speaks fluent German, and he praised his new home for supporting him to rebuild his life. However, the initial phase of his relocation was wrought with uncertainty, as he could not procure a visa. Without a visa and other proper documents, Alsalami could not restart his training.

Finally, he resolved to acknowledge his refugee status. With that mindset, he set to rebuilding himself, saying to himself, “You simply must persist and never give up. Exercise patience and believe in yourself, whether it?s in sports or in everyday life.” Now, his hard work has paid off, and with his exemplary performance at the World Athletics Championships, the world knows his name.
