Zharnel Hughes has been a treat to watch on the track this year. The athlete broke a 30-year-old British record held by Linford Christie in the 100-meter race in June 2023 to become the fastest British sprinter. And now Hughes is ready to work his magic in the Diamond League. Fans anticipate the British athlete breaking another record set in 1993.

Along with fans, Noah Lyles is also excited for the Anguilla-Born athlete to break the record. The Olympic medalist, who with 19.83 seconds tied the time with Usain Bolt’s record in 200m, is in hopes of Zharnel Hughes breaking a record set by John Reign. Recently, Lyles showed his support for Hughes at a press conference in London.

On July 22, the official Diamond League event account posted a short video with the caption, “Why are you being so modest, man? @LylesNoah backs @zharnel_hughes to break the 200m British record.” In the video, while being asked about breaking the 19.94 seconds set in 1993, Hughes stated that the athlete’s priority is to execute the Diamond League rather than focusing on breaking records. Further, the athlete talking about the record set by John Reign stated, “It?s something that?s on the board, and if it comes tomorrow, I?ll be happy.”

However, American sprinter Noah Lyles believes Hughes will most definitely break the record. The sprinter humorously accused Hughes of being modest while applauding the British runner for his staunch performance on the wet tracks of the Amsterdam 100 m race. The sprinter stated: “You just ran in a hurricane. We can get that [time] most definitely.”?

After breaking Christie?s record and becoming the fastest British athlete on July 8, Zharnel Hughes exhibited another staunch performance on the tracks in Manchester. Hughes sprinted the 100-meter race track in pouring rain in just 10.03 seconds. In essence, Hughes has been in his best form all through this season. Hopefully, in the Diamond League, the athlete will maintain his zeal.
