The life of Michael Phelps is one full of records, achievements, and medals. Not only is Phelps a champion inside the pool, but he is also an icon outside it. The legendary swimmer has been a prominent advocate in the fight against mental health taboo. Phelps has often come forth to discuss his struggles since an early age.

One of the most prominent reasons behind Phelps’ struggles was his father’s departure from the family. After his parents’ divorce, a young Phelps continued living with his mother and two sisters while not hearing much from his father.

Michael Phelps reconnects with his father

After having already taken part in four Olympics, Michael Phelps found himself in one of his darkest phases. In September 2014, Phelps was caught speeding in a 45mph zone. The swimmer was charged with DUI and got a one-year suspension. He also received 18 months of supervised probation. The Olympian then joined therapy, which proved pivotal in helping him turn his life around. While at the rehab center, Michael invited his father over for a family week.

Talking about the same, Phelps once mentioned what the journey was like. He said, “I felt abandoned. I have an amazing mother and two amazing sisters. But I would like to have a father in my life, and I’ve been carrying that around for 20 years.” Michael added, “And now my father and I communicate. It’s not fixed. You don’t fix something like that. But it’s better.”

The father-son duo has shared an ‘on and off’ relationship. Michael’s father would often go to watch his son compete live. While most of these visits were warmly welcomed, one visit came bearing some unhappy tidings.

When Michael’s father gave him some unsettling news during a major event

In 2000, a 16-year-old Michael Phelps was set to debut on the biggest stage of them all. It was Michael’s first ever Olympic race, and the teenager would have had to handle ample nerves. But that was not all Phelps had to process.

On the first day of the swimming races, Michael’s father, Fred Phelps, shared some devastating news with his son. Fred pulled Michael aside and asked him to meet his new wife. It was a piece of news no one was aware of. Speaking about the incident, Michael’s coach, Bob Bowman, said Michael could not handle the news. Bob said it was the first day when Michael could have enjoyed himself, but he had the news dumped on him. Phelps finished 5th in the 200m Butterfly event at the Sydney games.
