“This Was Truly Phenomenal”: 17-Year-Old Petar Mitsin of Bulgaria Smashes World Junior Record in Men’s 400 Freestyle

The 2023 European Junior Championships saw spectacular performances from all the young swimmers. One athlete that definitely stood out was Bulgarian swimmer, Petar Mitsin. The seventeen-year-old won everyone’s hearts with his exceptional performance in all events he participated in. He ended the competition with an even more impressive feat that had everyone talking about him.

Mitsin won the gold in the 400m freestyle event. Not only did he win, but he also smashed the World Junior Record in the process. Spectators were in awe of this young man’s talent. Petar Mitsin ends the 2023 European Junior Championships with a bang

Mitsin competed against Alessandro Ragaini and Vlad Stancu in the 400m freestyle on the last day of the Championships. Both the Italian and Romanian athletes, respectively, have impressive track records in the sport. Despite facing tough competition, Mitsin displayed exceptional speed and left his opponents trailing behind. He won the gold medal after finishing the race in 3:44.31. Interestingly, this victory marked Mitsin shattering three records all at once.

Kyle Sockwell, former pro swimmer turned journalist, recently uploaded a video of the teen sensation finishing the race well ahead of his competitors. He captioned the video, “17-year-old Petar Mitsin of Bulgaria just broke the World Junior Record in the Men’s 400 freestyle with a MASSIVE 3:44.31”. The previous record holder was Mack Horton, who swam in the same event and finished at 3:44.60 in 2014. The Bulgarian swimmer obliterated the previous record by nearly three-tenths of a second, leaving no doubt about his talent. Petar also set the new European Junior Record and the European Junior Championship Record. One viewer commented on Kyle’s tweet: “Been watching EJs all week. This was truly phenomenal”. This epic performance came on the heels of similar stunning performances in other events at the Championships.

On the second day of the Championships, Petar participated in the 200m freestyle. He finished the race at 1:46.50 and won the event. His time is currently the best time recorded by any Bulgarian swimmer in this particular event. Petar also dazzled everyone in the 800m freestyle, where he touched the wall at 7:47.45. This became his new personal best in the event and earned him a place at the top of the meets records. He has a better time than Larsen Jensen, the U.S. boys’ 17-18 national age group record holder. So, if he were to compete in the U.S. world trials, he would lead the all-time list.
