Kyle Sockwell, former pro swimmer turned journalist, recently uploaded a video of the teen sensation finishing the race well ahead of his competitors. He captioned the video, “17-year-old Petar Mitsin of Bulgaria just broke the World Junior Record in the Men’s 400 freestyle with a MASSIVE 3:44.31”. The previous record holder was Mack Horton, who swam in the same event and finished at 3:44.60 in 2014. The Bulgarian swimmer obliterated the previous record by nearly three-tenths of a second, leaving no doubt about his talent. Petar also set the new European Junior Record and the European Junior Championship Record. One viewer commented on Kyle’s tweet: “Been watching EJs all week. This was truly phenomenal”. This epic performance came on the heels of similar stunning performances in other events at the Championships.

Petar Mitsin’s historic triumph at the 2023 European Junior Championships
On the second day of the Championships, Petar participated in the 200m freestyle. He finished the race at 1:46.50 and won the event. His time is currently the best time recorded by any Bulgarian swimmer in this particular event. Petar also dazzled everyone in the 800m freestyle, where he touched the wall at 7:47.45. This became his new personal best in the event and earned him a place at the top of the meets records. He has a better time than Larsen Jensen, the U.S. boys’ 17-18 national age group record holder. So, if he were to compete in the U.S. world trials, he would lead the all-time list.

With three golds and a couple of records under his belt, Petar’s performance will always be remembered. He has garnered attention from the international swimming community.
