Ryan Murphy is a record-breaking swimmer. He finished the 2023 World Aquatics Championships with four medals. Along the way, he helped set a competition record in the men’s 4X100m medley relay. Murphy finished with two gold, one silver, and one bronze medal. The silver was for the men’s 200m backstroke while the bronze was for the mixed 4X100m relay.
Ryan Murphy entered the 100m backstroke as a favorite at the 2023 US Open Championship. After all, earlier this year, at the Fukuoka World Aquatics Championships, he won the gold medal in the same event, finishing with a time of 52.22 seconds. He also holds the world record for the 100m backstroke, 51.85 seconds, set at the Rio Olympic Games. This time, he lost out to two others.

20-year-old Hungarian swimmer Hubert Kos and Murphy’s 22-year-old compatriot Hunter Armstrong secured gold and silver respectively this time. They consigned Ryan Murphy to the bronze medal in that part of the competition. The X handle, SwimSwam, listed those who finished atop the podium in the race alongside their timings. Kos finished half a second ahead of Armstrong, who finished almost neck and neck with Murphy.

Hubert Kos finished the race with 912 points, while Hunter Armstrong and Ryan Murphy finished with 886 and 885, respectively. The Hungarian recorded a time of 53.19 seconds, falling just 0.08 seconds short of his personal best. Armstrong finished in 53.72 seconds, just ahead of Murphy, who totaled 53.74 seconds. Hubert Kos swims for the same club team as Leon Marchand.

World champion Leon Marchand missing
Leon Marchand, who secured three golds at Fukuoka and set a world record for good measure, is a member of the Arizona State Sun Devils swim team. He opted out of the US Open due to an illness. The nature of said illness is yet to be revealed. Marchand bested Michael Phelps‘ last standing world record in the 400m individual medley by 1.34 seconds.

Ryan Murphy also finished 23rd in the men’s 100m butterfly. It remains to be seen if he can add to his medal haul during the rest of the competition. Moreover, there are the 2024 Olympic Games to be held in Paris. The six-time Olympic medalist will keep his eyes trained on doing well on the banks of the Seine.
