Desperate Search Continues for Missing Swimmers in Mississippi River

At first, the police thought the missing trio were fishermen. However, a more thorough investigation revealed that the missing individuals belonged to one family. Four members of an Oakdale family had gone to the riverside on the northern side of Diamond Island, situated on the Vermillion River, close to its junction with the Mississippi. The group comprised two males and two females. One man stayed on the shore to fish while the others jumped into the river.

According to reports from the Sherriff’s office, “the swimmers started struggling in the water.” The man on the shore immediately jumped into the river to save his family. He saved the adult woman and again jumped back to rescue the others. As per the news release from the Sherriff’s department, “both men and the girl went underwater and never came back up”. The first distress call to 911 was made almost fifteen minutes later. Since then, the rescue operation has continued, except for a brief moment on Monday evening. The bad weather condition disrupted the search efforts. Many people, including members of the sporting community, have expressed their concern for the family.

The Minnesota DNR and the U.S. Wildlife Fish and Game Department have provided their assistance to the local authorities. The authorities have also alerted the private boaters to report any suspicious activities or sightings in the area. The authorities know that the crowds on the water on the 4th of July will make the search more difficult. They have therefore issued a warning, asking locals to be watchful of their speed on the river and, if possible, stay clear of the intersection between the Mississippi and Vermillion Rivers.
