Michael Phelps is a known name in the swimming world. A feat that is rarely achieved, Phelps has weaved his illustrious swimming career over two long decades. The swimming legend continues to be on the top of the sport with 28 Olympic medals. Michael’s achievements stand taller than his height.

Breaking the records was never easy for Phelps. It was not just his devotion to the sport but also his family’s support that helped Phelps swim through times of difficulties. Through thick and thin, Phelps’ mother stood like a rock. Mother’s sacrifice can never be repaid but can indeed be thanked, and Phelps chose the second option.

Being a single mother to three kids, Debbie struggled to juggle professional commitments and family life. Yet she managed to devour her heart out for her children.

Recalling his mother’s sacrifice, Phelps’ in his book,” No Limits: The Will to Succeed,” talks about her daily struggle with the black Jetta. Phelps said that his mother wanted to buy a new car, but prioritizing her children’s needs, “she felt it was just too expensive” for the time.

Phelps found the right way to thank his mother. The duo went to the Mercedes showroom and took a silver ML320s home for the weekend. Much to her surprise, Phelps made the down payment and left the car key in the stocking.

All Phelps could say was, “You know this is for everything that you’ve done for me- all the car rides to practice and meets, all the food and Gatorade you’ve bought, all the encouragement, all the patience. There’s no way I could have done any of this without….” An emotional Debbie could only hug Phelps in return!

After divorce, Debbie Phelps was the sole caregiver for her three children, Phelps, and his two sisters. Showing her indomitable spirit, she returned to school to complete her master’s degree before working as a principal and administrator in a school.

She single-handedly raised her kids. Michael confessed that he could not always thank Debbie but seizing the opportunity that Christmas, he successfully made her feel special.
