Bridgette O’Shannessy is an honors student of environmental sciences at Flinders University. The 32-year-old found herself face-first into the piercing jaws of a great white pointer shark while swimming on 10 November. The incident occurred at the Port Noarlunga reef and was luckily spotted by her diving partner, Brian Gordon Peters.

Peters pushed and drove away the violent beast before it could cause more damage to O’Shannessy and applied pressure on her wounds immediately after. Peters’ cries for help reached the ears of an off-duty lifeguard, Ray Tomlinson who assisted the young man. The shark attack victim was promptly rushed to the Flinders Medical Center where she was operated on.

The woman went through a couple of surgeries and the doctors unfortunately had to remove several teeth of hers during the operation. O’Shannessy was successfully operated on and has received a second chance at life. However, things could’ve gone horribly wrong if her diving partner wouldn’t have been present at the scene.

Lifeguard Ray Tomlinson was the first official to respond to the terrible shark attack at the Port Noarlunga reef. The lifeguard said that he noticed that Peters had been applying pressure on O’Shannessy’s wounds for quite some time. While she was still in terrible shape, this ensured that the shark attack victim didn’t face much stress.

Doctors treated O’Shannessy for multiple injuries and nerve damage. Fortunately, the shark attack victim is expected to make a full recovery. The lightning-fast response of Peters and the sheer bravery shown by him played a pivotal role in O’Shannessy’s recovery.
