Ocean Brown, an extraordinary soul, has dedicated the past decade of her life as a member of the Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club. Today, at 17, she embarks on a heartfelt mission to express her gratitude to the Hospital that provided unwavering support during her four-month journey of battling a rare genetic condition. Diagnosed with Elhers-Danlos syndrome, her paralyzed stomach became a cause for concern. As reported by Jersey Evening Post, the compassionate staff at the Hospital, who stood as pillars of strength for Ocean and her family, became her guiding light through this arduous ordeal. In a touching gesture, a cake sale was organized at the Hospital’s Corbière Ward, the place where Ocean spent most of her time, as a means to give back and uplift the spirits of those who had cared for her.
Grateful for the unwavering support of the hospital staff, The Long Distance Swimming Club extended an invitation to fellow islanders, urging them to participate in a meaningful fundraising sea swim at Archirondel on 21 May. She aimed to honor the indomitable spirit that carried her through the darkest days while raising vital funds for the institution that provided her with lifeline care. This heartwarming event celebrates resilience, community, and the power of giving back. The challenge to raise money for Jersey Hospice Care and pay tribute to the late ‘Charlie’ Gravett, who had received their care until his passing on 6 July 2020, was undertaken by then-14-year-old Ocean Brown. The final mile in St Catherine’s Bay was completed by Ocean, accompanied by 25 others, including Charlie’s wife, the esteemed cross-Channel swimmer Sally Minty-Gravett MBE.
