A New Jersey dad recently proved that there really is no limit to a parent’s love. 42-year-old Rolando Camarillo-Cholula gave his life while rescuing his children from a tragic river incident. Camarillo-Cholula took his three young kids for a fun day of swimming at the local river.
They were swimming in the Millstone River in noontime on Wednesday near Franklin Township. Suddenly, the three kids became distressed and were unable to continue swimming. Thankfully their dad was nearby and immediately noticed their struggle. Without hesitation, Camarillo-Cholula sprang into action and fearlessly swam up to his children. He managed to save all three kids, but the powerful currents claimed his life instead.

An unidentified person saw the whole incident unfold and called 911 for help. On the distress call, he reported, “a man in the water, with three children on shore”. The man did not venture into the river, fearing for his own life. When the Franklin Township Police arrived on the scene along Canal Road between Coppermine Road and Old Georgetown Road Camarillo-Cholula was nowhere to be found. It was already 2:15 p.m. when the police arrived and found the three children looking for their father. According to the statements given to the authorities by the three kids, ages 8, 11, and 13, Rolando Camarillo-Cholula went under in shallow waters.
The report published on Yahoo News stated that “the father lost his balance after he waded into the waters in a bid to help his kids”. The Franklin Township Police did not waste any more time and launched a big rescue operation along the 39-mile-long Millstone River shore. They even expanded the search to cover the Raritan Riverbanks where the Millstone River drains. Finally, Rolando Camarillo-Cholula’s body was recovered at 5:30 p.m. by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s divers. The children were heartbroken at the sight of their father’s dead body. The medical staff immediately attended to the children, providing them with emotional support and counseling to help them cope with the traumatic experience. The police have begun an investigation and are treating this as a priority, especially with three other recent drowning incidents in New Jersey.

Police take extra measures to prevent repeat swimming accidents
In the last three months, three other individuals have died from drowning. The first report came from Sandy Hook Beach B in May, where a teen died from swimming in an unsupervised location. Next, another father sacrificed himself in June to save his daughter from the rough waters at Jersey Shore. He was an NYC firefighter from Teaneck, and the community mourned his loss. In the same month, Victor Rodriguez died in Pitman Lake while participating in a scavenger hunt. Rolando Camarillo-Cholula is the fourth person to die in the same way in New Jersey.

Franklin Township authorities have sprung to action and cautioned locals about the “hidden currents, sudden depths, and cold shock” in New Jersey’s waters. They have even installed warning signs to remind people of the potential risks associated with water activities. Vincent Wilson, the Franklin Township Police Lieutenant, has not banned locals from swimming in the Millstone River. However, he believes that residents can enjoy the river safely with the new security measures in place.
