When it comes to any victory around the Olympic games, it’s always teamwork; there’s always someone who is working tirelessly in the shadows to make it happen. In the case of Team USA’s swimmers, that person was a true legend—but not in the way you might think. While Michael Phelps and others racked gold medals, there was one person behind them ensuring they stayed at their peak. Now, the swimming world is in shock as this unsung hero has sadly passed away.

This man wasn’t just a therapist; he was The Therapist. Starting with the 2004 Olympics till 2012, he was the go-to person for keeping Team USA’s swimmers in their best form. No matter if it accounted for loosening tight muscles, managing injuries that occurred, or just being a presence under which they felt calm and ensured. He was always there. Period. And it wasn’t only about the Olympics. There was so much to him! But if you swim competitively or follow it closely, you already know his name.

More than anyone could imagine

We’re talking about none other than Dr. Brian Campbel. The man who made sure that Team USA swimmers with competing thrived as well. As a chiropractor and massage therapist, Dr. Campbell’s legacy is not just marked by his role at the Olympics. It is also by his solid dedication to athletes’ overall well-being. He put his heart and soul there. He served in the 5th SFG(A) and also joined a medical civic trip to Kenya. And for more than 13 years, he was the heartbeat behind UCLA’s swim team. He supported them in more ways than anyone could imagine.

Even though Dr. Campbell’s role was often behind the scenes, it was his expertise and attention to detail that set him apart from everyone. He had a very deep understanding of anatomy, and with that he combined his recovery techniques that helped swimmers like Michael Phelps maintain their dominant form, time and time again.

Beyond the iconic Olympic Games, Dr. Campbell traveled around the world with Team USA. Whether it was at the World University Games in 2007 or the Japan International Grand Prix, he was always there, ensuring the swimmers had the recovery and support they needed to succeed. His dedication didn’t stop at the physical level.

Dr. Campbell closely witnessed the strains of competing at the highest level. He never backed down from offering athletes the guidance and emotional support they needed. His relationships with his peers and athletes were close knit. For Michael Phelps, he was a trusted friend. Someone who offered a sense of calm in the midst of intense competition. Michael Phelps posted a story on his Instagram with a caption that said, “So many memories, Brian.. rip buddy …Thought and prayers to ur fam, The stories of ur son…the jokes. 20 years of good times.. thank you for being such a good human! #shrekndonkey”
