At the Doha 2024 World Aquatics Championships, five-time world champion Nicolas Fink made waves by winning his first gold in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke long course. Fink faced fierce opposition in the 50-meter breaststroke Wednesday, coming in third behind Australia’s Sam Williamson and Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi. Interestingly, British Olympian and Fink’s opponent Adam Peaty finished in fourth position according to the worldaquatics.com.
After taking gold in the close contested 100m breaststroke final, Fink didn’t miss his competitor when talking with olympics.com, he said, “With the way everyone is performing and improving – it was great to see Adam Peaty back in the water as he’s just great for the sport – it’s great to have a familiar situation every time I go out and race.”
Fink’s prowess goes beyond individual competition and has a major impact on the American medal total. He had the lead early in the 100-meter breaststroke, but Adam Peaty closed the distance and took third place in the end. Meanwhile, Nicolo Martinenghi of Italy took home the silver. Fink’s outstanding accomplishment is a part of Team USA’s larger success story, which also includes notable athletes like Hunter Armstrong, Claire Curzan, and Luke Hobson.
