Twenty-five years ago, a man from Grand Haven, full of zeal and passion to attain something, created history. The 35-year-old forever etched his name in the swimming world by being the first and only person to swim across one of the biggest lakes in North America, Lake Michigan.

Now, 25 years later, Jim Dreyer has decided to again tackle the strong currents of Michigan waters. The 60-year-old swimmer nicknamed “The Shark” is a force to be reckoned with who is determined to achieve his dream. However, the record-breaking swimmer’s new expedition has unfortunately come to a halt.

Jim ‘The Shark’ Dreyer’s attempt is delayed for now

At the age of 35. Jim ‘The Shark Dreyer swam across Lake Michigan. And to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his historical record, the swimmer decided to swim across the lake again. On August 1st, at 6 a.m., The Shark decided to tackle the Michigan currents again. However, amid his 82-mile swim expedition, the swimmer was pulled out of the water. After covering only 10 miles of the lake due to worsening weather, Dreyer’s crew pulled the 60-year-old  out of the water. Later, the swimming crew, who were following alongside the 60-year-old on a boat, revealed the swimmer was completely healthy and safe.

Dreyer has decided to take up this swimming trip, also known as the ‘Silver Sequel,’ to celebrate his 60th birthday and the 25th anniversary of the sequel. In his last sequel of 1998, The Shark completed his journey of 65 miles in nearly 41 hours, however, this time the swimmer’s journey has increased by 25 miles, as Dryer will have to swim from Milwaukee to Grand Haven, Michigan.

The 60-year-old, ready to face the new challenge in an interview with Tmj4,  stated, “25 years later, 25 years older, and 25 miles further.” Apart from remaking history, Dreyer is also participating in this sequel for a good cause. The swimmer is swimming across the lake to raise money for an independent U.S. Coast Guard group of his hometown Grand Haven Chapter and Western Lake Michigan, Milwaukee.

‘The Shark’ swimming for a good cause

The 60-year-old Dreyer, along with participating in the sequel again to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Wind, is also raising money for a good cause. The swimmer is raising funds for the Chief Petty Officers Association. An individual service group that works for the enlisted members of the US Coast Guard. While talking about the association’s role in his life, The Shark revealed to the media “I have enjoyed working with the professional men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard throughout my 25-year career,” Dreyer said. “At my side, they have played a vital role in my success, and together we have undertaken projects to improve swimmer safety.”

Jim Dreyer truly does the words age is just a number justice. And although his swimming expedition has stopped for now, Hopefully, the swimmer, through his will and passion to recreate history, will finish the 60-hour journey soon.
