It was the year 2004 when the first of many Olympic glories was clinched by the swimming icon Michael Phelps. And ever since then, the swimming demigod set on his voyage to frame a multitude of accolades on his wall of fame. Interestingly, at the 2004 Athens Olympics, Phelps stood atop the podium by bagging his first ever Olympic medal in 400m individual medley and became the epitome for millions.

Nonetheless, 19 years after he flaunted his incredible feat in the turquoise turf of the Greek capital, the Baltimore Bullet reminisced his first medal winning spree and shared his elation with his fandom.

Michael Phelps opens up about his favorite memory of his career

With 28 Olympic medals in his cabinet, Phelps never fails to relive a moment from his past performances at the Olympics. He recently shared his favorite races on his Instagram story which made his followers go crazy. On the same note, he pointed out his first-ever Olympic gold medal in 2004 at Athens as his favorite race.

Phelps re-posted a video of his 2004 race posted by Retro Swimming and wrote “One of my fav races of all time!! 1-2 w Vendt!”?The video carried the entire race and then Phelps receiving his first- ever Olympic medal.

He nabbed this win in the 400m individual medley at Athens by clocking a time of 4:08.26. Following was Erik Vendt who was just three seconds slower than Phelps and attained the second position. This win made Phelps the then-world record holder.

In Athens, Phelps clinched a whopping six golds (100m butterfly, 200m butterfly, 200m medley, 400m medley, 4x200m freestyle, 4x100m medley) and two bronze (200m freestyle, 4x100m freestyle). This day was the beginning of the rise of a swimming phenom. Even after so many years of this incredible moment, Phelps took a moment to look back to the day when he started his gold medal spree. Interestingly, as he clinched a multitude of accolades to his name, along the way, he also surpassed a 2000-year-old record set by Leonidas of Rhodes.

The unheard record of Michael Phelps?

Michael Phelps has not only broken records of the swimmers he competed with. He has also broken the 2000-year-old record of Leonidas of Rhodes. Long before Usain Bolt, Rhodes was known as the fastest man alive. As the three-time sprinting champion of his time, the Greek hero was hailed with the title ?Triastes? or tripler.

He was part of the last golden age of the ancient games spanning from 164 to 152 BC. Although there were no digital clocks to record his speed, historian Philostratus mentioned his winning streak in his book Gymnastikos.

He held twelve wins to his name, and none had been able to surpass his mark till Michael Phelps came into the picture. Mrs. Nicole Phelps?posted a stats list yesterday on her Instagram story?and proclaimed her husband?s dominance proudly. She captioned the post,??Look at this stat?He beat Leonidas?my brain won?t even do the math to figure out how long ago that record was held?.

Phelps in 2016 at the Rio Olympics, made sure to surpass this record by winning the 200m individual medley. This stat was recently shared by his wife Nicole Phelps. The Baltimore Bullet indeed is a force to be reckoned with as he celebrates a decorated vocation with a hoard full of victories to his name.
