Matthew Sates has stunned the swimming community with his incredible performance on Day 2 of the Swimming World Cup 2023. He has been compared to the athlete who broke Michael Phelp’s record Leon Marchand for medal holdings. Attaining gold in the Men’s 200 IM was his first win of the World Cup Series. He did not stop at this, he also attained his second gold in the 200m Butterfly.

The World Aquatics noticing the potential shared an appreciation post for the South African Swimmer on their X account. They shared a picture of him in the pool while competing and the caption carried, “What a night for Matthew Sates.” The incredibly talented swimmer earned back-to-back golds on the same day in two different events with a comfortable win.
He nabbed the win in 200m IM with a time of 1:58.01 and his second win was in the 200m Butterfly with a time of 1:55.87. With two medals in his hand, it hints at a competition towards the triple gold medalist Leon Marchand.

With Chad le Clos’s world record in the Men’s 200 Butterfly that has been unmatched since 2015, he was seen to be the contender against Leon Marchand.
