Pressure takes a toll even on the best of the athletes. Michael Phelps, Matt Grevers, and Ian Thorpe are examples of it. Recently, Olympics champion Adam Peaty disclosed how he felt the same. Speaking about how sacrificing months to prepare for the Olympics was challenging for him, Peaty described how he developed a negative mindset. He also revealed his thoughts of self-destruction if he didn’t get the expected outcome.

Peaty’s admissions shed light on his decision to withdraw from the British Championships recently. Interestingly, Peaty’s acknowledgments came after he said he was tired, referring to participating in competitive swimming. In a recent interview given to The Times, Peaty held nothing back about his mental health struggles. He also opined on competing in the Paris 2024 Olympics.

During the interview given to The TimesPeaty admitted, “It’s been an incredibly lonely journey…I’ve been on a self-destructive spiral.” Further, he implied how he experienced FOMO (the fear of missing out). He also expressed how he began thinking that he couldn’t get what he desired to be happy.

Later, he related, “I got to a point in my career where I didn’t feel like myself- I didn’t feel happy swimming, I didn’t feel happy racing- my biggest love in the sport.” He backed out from the British Championships as he didn’t know why he was battling (in swimming competitions). Clearly, swimming from the age of four for more than 18 years, Peaty is still not sure of his end goal.

Afterward, while Peaty indicated his intention to perform in the Paris 2024 Olympics, he also admitted how preparing for this event would be a “whole different journey.” Interestingly, in an earlier Instagram post, he had also mentioned that his aim of withdrawing from the event was to try his best in the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.

In the same Instagram post shared on 29th March, Peaty also addressed the backlash he received for withdrawing from the British Championships. “Everyone wants to sit in your seat until they have to sit in your seat…They don’t understand the pressures these individual’s put on themselves to win over and over again.”

The Olympic champion’s disclosures again show how competitive swimming can result in burnout in the best of athletes. Do you think Peaty will make a strong comeback in the 2024 Paris Olympics? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
