Hwang just made history by being the first swimmer from South Korea to place third in three straight world championships. He won silver two years ago and bronze the previous year in the 200m freestyle. In addition, this year’s victory is special for the 20-year-old who became the third South Korean swimmer to win a world championship.
He now joined Kim Woo-min, the gold medalist from Sunday’s men’s 400-meter freestyle event, and Park Tae-hwan, who won similar titles in 2007 and 2011. South Korea’s medal tally in the World Aquatic Championship has reached a new height with Hwang’s gold medal, adding to four.
