Another infant suffers a water tragedy despite Baltimore Bullet’s tenacious attempts to encourage safe swimming. While millions of people agree that Michael Phelps is a beast in the pool, he agrees with the hazards of the water. The CDC reports that drowning is the leading cause of mortality for kids between the ages of 1-4. Being familiar with the disastrous potential of water Phelps actively advocates safe swimming practices for minors. However, several endeavors and initiatives fall short due to grave negligence, which causes over 4,000 drownings each year.
For the swimmer and father of three who wants to raise awareness, the statistics are always of utmost concern. People gathered by the pool as summer arrived in America, which once again increased the risk of drowning mishaps. Yet another life was put in danger due to poolside negligence in a recent saddening incident in Rhode Island.

Swimming tragedy fails relentless safety efforts
On 28 July a 2-year-old drowned in an above-ground swimming pool in Coventry, Kent County. According to the police, emergency responders hurried to Tero Drive around 7 p.m.?when the call reported an unconscious infant. The child was taken to the hospital Friday evening in a critical condition reported WPRI. The Coventry Police Department confirmed an investigation is under progress since the baby was discovered in an unresponsive state.
How the toddler got into the pool is now a mystery. Chief Rick Heise provided more information on the incident, adding that the child had received CPR and other resuscitative measures before being taken to Kent County Hospital. Heise further stated that the child was then sent to Hasbro Children’s Hospital for additional medical attention. Right now, the kid’s health is still serious.
Taking note of such tragedies Phelps takes charge by sharing “alarming” stats and instructing children on safety practices. Phelps sets a good example for his children and actively involves himself in their water safety training. To get them accustomed to the sensation he used to detest, he also frequently “dunked” them in the water. Phelps believes that giving children confidence in the water is the most important part of their first swimming session and advocates the same through various initiatives.
Swimming safety and Michael Phelps’s initiatives
The Michael Phelps Foundation has been promoting water safety, especially for kids. Phelps also encourages kids to sign the Pool Safely Pledge, which commits them to never swim alone, ask their parents for swimming lessons, and stay away from drains in pools or hot tubs. The group has been working to better the lives of kids by showing them how to have fun while keeping safe around and in the water. To expand its kid-focused water safety initiatives, the Michael Phelps Foundation has received grant funding from the Step Into Swim program.
A few years back, the children’s television program PAW Patrol also started a global water safety initiative named “PAW Patrol Safety First!.” The program aims to teach kids water safety and avoid drowning by increasing awareness. Additionally, Phelps served as the World Ambassador for Water Safety. While Phelps initiatives and the Coventry investigation are underway, it is expected that the public to learn important lessons that may be applied going forward to avert similar tragic incidents.
