The U.S. swimming team made quite a splash at the Pan American Games, a stage that brings together athletes from across the Americas. The adventure of Santiago has proved to be quite a warmup for Team USA as they set their sight high at the Paris Olympics. The swimming competition at the 2023 Pan American Games reached its exhilarating conclusion at the Centro Acuático del Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile.
With Team USA emerging as the stars of the show, they secured an impressive tally topping medals over five days of intense competition, including six medals on the final day. Considered as one of the most fierce teams for the USA to compete, the team itself engraved their names in the annals of US swimming history.
Dominating the Pan American Games
After the US swimmers’ blazing performance at the tournament, the official X (formerly Twitter) account of Team USA shared a glimpse of a dream medals tally. Captioning “The legacy continues 🔥”, the official account pictured what it looked like at the top podium. Their stellar performance saw them bag a whopping 46 medals – 19 gold, 17 silver, and 10 bronze, and six of them came on the very final day of the commencement of the Pan American Games at Santiago.

With more than 350 athletes from 41 federations participating in the pool events, this competition boasted the largest number of athletes in any sport at the Pan American Games. It exemplifies the significance of the event on the international stage and the level of excellence demonstrated by these swimmers. Among the standout performances, Rachel Stege, representing Naperville, Ill., and the Athens Bulldog Swim Club, broke a Pan American Games record in the women’s 1500m freestyle with a jaw-dropping time of 16:13.59, nearly 16 seconds faster than her previous personal best.
The Road to the Paris Olympics
With the Pan American Games serving as a stepping stone, all the members of the participating team give it their all. While some of them clocked their personal best, most of them helped the team overall. The training sessions in Santiago have been instrumental in preparing them for the Paris Olympics. The high-altitude training has helped enhance their stamina and endurance, key factors in competitive swimming.
Rachel Stege, the best amongst the team is considered to be the one to look for in the Paris Olympics. According to USA Swimming, she advocated her feeling right after the win and said, “That was definitely a really fun race. I obviously love how it turned out so I’m really happy. I think I did really well. I definitely got a personal best by a lot – wasn’t expecting that – so I’m just very proud of myself and love repping the United States.”

However, carrying out a legacy of medals, and the preparation for the Olympics in Paris, the swimmers will be carrying the hopes of a nation.
