The United States vs. Australia rivalry reached a new stage at the 2023 World Championships held in Budapest. Australia had earned the most gold medals than any other participating nation, but America had the most overall medals. As a natural consequence, Team U.S.A. earned the team award for the championships. Australian swimmers were not happy with this decision and issued heated jabs at their American counterparts. The American swimmers were waiting for an opportunity to return the favor with an epic clap back and finally had the chance at the Swimming World Cup 2023.
Olympic Champion Cate Campbell was Australia’s flag bearer in today’s 50-meter butterfly heat in the Athens leg of the Swimming World Cup 2023. She is a world record holder in multiple events and made the Australian record in the 50-meter butterfly in the 2018 Australian Trials. However, her disastrous result in the morning heats today set against her American rival’s victory surely left a bitter taste.

Cate Campbell loves the 50m fly in particular and calls it “a little bit of fun”. But with her recent harrowing defeat at the hands of an American rival, Torri Huske, her feelings might have altered. Cate Campbell did not have to wait long to get into the pool on October 14. Unlike Torri Huske, who entered the competition in heat 6, she was part of the lineup in heat 1.
However, in an astonishing twist, Cate Campbell recorded 26.96 seconds at the final whistle and earned a disappointing 744 Aqua points for her speed. She featured at rank 12 on the leaderboard while her American rival Torri Huske appeared on the other end of the spectrum. She occupied the third rank on the scoreboard with a time of 26.17 seconds to avenge her defeat at the Berlin leg of the Swimming World Cup 2023.
