While the swimming world recovers from the horrific incident of Bolton Park another spine-chilling tragedy took place at the Devil’s Hole. The “rite of passage” in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, was created when a cave collapsed years ago. The city’s north shore is home to the swimming hole, a natural attraction with an unimpeded water flow. The natural crater became a favorite hangout place for teens during the summer when schools were shut down and they would throng there to take a dip. A ban was imposed the following year when the number of deaths also rose.

The community has long warned people to avoid the Peckman River’s deepest zone as it is “extremely dangerous.” Many people, however, continue to endanger their lives despite the warning signs and regular patrols in the vicinity. Recently, another youngster paid a last visit to the Devil’s Hole.

Swimming stint takes another life in Devil’s Hole

On Saturday evening, an unidentified dead body was found at the banned Devil’s Hole. According to the Cedar Grove Police, the rescue team hauled him out and later confirmed he was eighteen years old. As usual, the officers conducted a regular inspection of the area at 5:15 pm but found no one swimming. According to nj.com, speculations were made that the deceased entered the water post the checks and did not resurface.

After receiving a call at 6 pm, the authorities took action to resuscitate the dead. Soon after the tragic incident, the police wrote on their social media,  “Our hearts are with the victim’s family and friends as well as our community during this difficult time.” The “No Trespassing” signs and the area’s swimming warnings were also cited by the police in their comments despite the fact that they are routinely disregarded.

The Vermont event, in which a 20-year-old got caught in a vortex running between the waterfalls, occurred just a few days before the Devil’s Hole incident. He made a horrible mistake by leaping to death from a cliff into the swift water stream. Even the 200-ft death hole, which has a horrifying history of death tolls, fails to deter youths from having a swim in New Jersey.

At the 200 feet deep crater, many swimmers who sneak in for a swim hardly ever make it out alive. The drowning of an 18-year-old at the Devil’s Hole in 2014 led the authorities to permanently outlaw swimming and other activities there. While teens kept following a long route that descended a steep slope to go swimming, it resulted in a constant loss of life. But it wasn’t until 2017 that the advent of social media turned the place into a trendy hangout spot.

The same year it was found that the water was polluted with dangerous sewage disposal. The police had previously issued a statement describing the area.”dangerous rock ledges leading up to the water’s edge.” Swimmers need to be more responsible for their safety even while the police continue to perform their jobs.
