Day 2 in Athens witnessed performances that reigned over the arena with all their might. Michael Andrew faced an unexpected situation while performing at the 100m Butterfly. The US athlete was all set to bag the win until the South African contender came in and crushed his dreams.

Michael Andrew almost won the 100m Butterfly on Day 2 at Athens in Swimming World Cup 2023

After clinching 4 gold in the 2023 World Cup, American athlete Michael Andrew was almost there to nab his 5th gold in 100 m butterfly of Day 2 in Athens. However, things didn’t go as planned. Matthew Sates faced a blast of energy and nabbed the win clinching gold and waving South Africa’s flag high. The World Aquatics shared an appreciation post for the same on their social media account.

They shared a video of the 100m Butterfly race on their X account that portrayed the clear and beautiful win of Sates. Jumping from lane 6, Sates was not in the lead, however, in his last stroke he cut through the water like a bullet and defeated Andrew who was leading the race from the very start. He nabbed the win with a time of 51.82 and Andrew was in second position with a time of 51.92. The World Aquatics captioned the video as, “Matthew Sates Clinching the 100m Butterfly on the last stroke at #SWC23 in Athens.”?
Standing at the third position was the Australian swimmer Cody Simpson with a time of 0.64. Following him Ben Armbruster was in fourth position with a time of 51.99. Sates’ South-African teammate Chad le Clos attained the fifth position with a time of 0.63. Michael Andrew who has already nabbed so many medals in the 2023 World Cup faced disappointment after not being able to clinch his fifth gold.

Michael Andrew’s achievements at the World Cup
After the completion of meet 1 and Day 1 of meet 2 of the Swimming World Cup 2023, the American athlete Michael Andrew has already clinched four golds. He nabbed his first gold on the 6th of October 2023, in the Men’s 100m butterfly with a time of 51.66. His second gold was secured by him on the 7th of October, day 2 of the Berlin competition, he attained the first position in Men’s 50m Backstroke with a time of 24.47.

Moving forward to this third gold, he attained this one on Day 1 of Meet 2 in Athens. He won the Men 50m Freestyle with a time if 21.96. His fourth gold was on the Men 50 Backstroke heats on Day 2 of Athens with a time of 24.79. He has given an overall tremendous performance at the World cup and now his admirers are on their toes to witness his upcoming wins and whether he represents the US at the podium on Day 3 of Athens.
