According to Washington Post‘s report on the incident, Finney was enjoying swimming in the ocean with his daughter in his arms and they went underwater for a moment when a wave rolled over them. This is when suddenly a big weight slammed into Eugene Finney’s back and knocked the breath completely out of his lungs. Dazed and confused, with an adrenaline rush that kicked in a survival instinct, he quickly swam to the shore.

New York Post reported that Finney described the incident as, “I would say it’s like being hit by a ton of bricks, or like whiplash from a car, but it’s not that. I’ve never been hit like that before.” When he got out of the water, his daughter inquired about the blood on his back, and Finney realized he was bleeding from a cut.

But he still didn’t know what bumped into him until the next day when he read a report in a newspaper that a Great White shark had bumped into a surfer. And he realized that’s exactly what happened to him as well. Eugene Finney and his daughter made it out alive, but the ordeal was not over for Finney.

Shark Attack Saved This Man’s Life

After the incident, Finney started to have difficulty in breathing and was also experiencing chest pains. He thought this to be the aftermath of the shark attack and went to the doctor’s to get a check-up. A CAT scan revealed that his symptoms were actually a result of cancer. He had a small tumor that was located in his kidney.

However, lucky for Finney, doctors said that he would make full recovery. They operated on the tumor and Eugene Finney made full recovery. Eugene said that the shark attack was a “sign from mother nature” that saved his life. “Otherwise I would never have gone in, and they wouldn’t have caught it … I would have started losing weight and getting sick and at that point it would have been too late. If I could find this shark and give it a hug, I would.”
