Athletes experience a lot of pressure during meets. And they have to compete under enormous pressure. It stems from people’s unwavering expectations of them. Therefore, Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian, can handle stress and anxiety during such moments.

However, the swimmer became so nervous once he had to resort to making a joke about it to a friend. However, his friend gave a hilarious response to it.

Michael Phelps made a joke on his wedding day to reduce the pressure

Phelps and Nicole Johnson decided to get married after the birth of their first son in May. The couple followed the small ceremony with a grand wedding after returning from Rio. The pair settled for Cabo San Lucas, Mexico as the wedding location. And the couple got hitched on October 29. The wedding comprised 50 of their closest friends and family members on the guest list.

However, during an interview later that year, Phelps revealed how he became nervous standing under the arbor before Nicole walked down the aisle. The 28-time Olympic medalist joked about it to one of his friends to lighten the mood. However, his friend made a hilarious comeback.

Narrating the incident, the Flying Fish said, “ ‘Wow, now this is really happening.’ I made the joke to a friend of mine, ‘Well, there’s no turning back now,’ and he was like, ‘Nope, you’re stuck, bro!’ But a lot of my friends are really big smart a****, and we enjoy laughing and having fun.”

“[But there was] also a little bit of tears of happiness as well — [that after] everything we’ve been through, we’re finally at that point where we can make promises to each other,” the father of three continued.

Phelps marked his dominance in swimming early on. Although he did not secure a podium finish in his Olympic debut, he ruled his events from his second meet onwards, mostly clinching the gold. When he retired in 2016 following the Rio Olympics, he was already the winningest Olympian in the history of the meet.

Therefore, 2016 marked a significant year for the athlete. But his retirement only had a small role to play in it. Two other events occurred in his life that year. In May, he and his then-partner, Nicole Johnson, welcomed their first child. At the time, only a month remained till he had to head for the Olympics.

Therefore, the couple decided to marry in June so their son could fly to Rio to see his father perform at his last meet. The ceremony comprised just five members in the backyard of their Arizona residence.
