And not just for themselves but also for the well-being of those around them. But some people like Michael Phelps saw the pandemic and the lockdown period as a blessing in disguise.

Phelps took the months-long stay at home as an advantage. Michael and his wife, Nicole, worked on their relationship and spent time forming a close bond as a family.

Some of us were learning new skills, like baking or learning how to play an instrument. Many of us went back to picking up old hobbies. Most of us processed a personal loss now and then. Covid-19 was an emotional rollercoaster for probably each one of us. But, for Michael Phelps, it was a time to relish his days with his wife and kids while also working on his mental health. The swimming GOAT took this time and used it to great personal advantage.
During a recent interview, Phelps discussed how his priorities have changed and how he can no longer “compartmentalize” the way he used to. Michael said when he used to compete professionally. The swimmer would compartmentalize all the time as he was the one who had to do everything. But now, things are different, and he cannot do it anymore. The reason behind it is that other people will be affected by the decision.

Discussing how Covid led to the change, Phelps said, “I think Covid forced us into staying in that routine. But also, like, for a lack of a better word, sit in your own sh*t, right, like you had to. We had no other way. Nothing else to do. We were all doing it.” But Michael and Nicole turned a difficult time to their advantage. “Like I look at Covid as almost as a blessing. Because of the amount of growth that my wife and I went through. Um, the learning opportunities, everything, it was incredible.”

In a write-up, Nicole detailed how the pandemic was tougher for them with three children under 5. Not only was it a parental setback during the lockdown, but also a challenge after the restrictions were lifted.

For nearly two years, all the daycares and preschools were shut. And the children had to quarantine themselves in the confines of their homes. But, as everything reopened, the couple’s eldest son, Beckett, refused to go to school. Nicole and Michael were at a loss and needed guidance, she admitted. The couple handled their child’s emotions and helped him feel understood. The power couple made Beckett feel better about himself, who is back in preschool and thriving.
