Shark attacks have become a growing concern in the United States. Until July 2023, 34 shark attacks have taken place in the world, and 23 of them have been in the United States. The Florida beaches, due to surfing activities, have reported the most unprovoked attacks in the country this year. However, apart from Florida, New York has also recorded a fair share of shark attacks.

After eight shark attacks were reported in 2022, this year till now, New York beaches have reported five attacks by such gnarly beasts in the water. Recently, another horrifying shark attack took place at the Rockaway beaches in New York. On Monday, on the largest Urban beach in the country, a 65-year-old woman while swimming was attacked by a shark underwater. Amid this incident, the authorities have taken the necessary steps to avoid such accidents.

Another gnarly shark attack while Swimming in New York

On Monday, 7th August, a horror struck in the waters of Rockaway Beach. A woman named Tatyana Koltnyuk was severely injured after being bitten by a shark in the evening. Due to this unfortunate incident, Rockaway Beach has been closed to beachgoers going swimming or surfing in the waters. The woman, who’s identified as a 65-year-old, was bitten on the leg and “lost 20 pounds of flesh” by the gnarly beast’s attack near the beach 59th Street around 6 p.m.

The woman was severely injured and taken to Jamaica Hospital immediately. Naylor, a shark researcher believes the 65 years was attacked by a bluefish while highlighting her injury he stated “Twenty pounds. Is a lot of flesh…there’s no bony fish that does that.” According to a witness who was in aghast, in an interview with CBS News, stated, “The lady’s on the stretcher. She’s bleeding on the leg.” Another witness stated that the 65-year-old  was awake but still in disbelief at what just happened.

In light of this situation, Rockaway Beach has taken the necessary steps to avoid such accidents in the future. On August 8, NYC Parks tweeted, “As a safety precaution Rockaway Beach will be closed to swimming and surfing today., the tweet also revealed the New York Police Department is trying to keep beachgoers from swimming in the water. Both the FDNY and NYPD are also on active patrol to locate the sharks at the Rockaway beaches. Further, the authorities have used drones on the Beach to investigate this unfortunate incident. Rockaway Beach has not reported many shark attacks in the past. Many locals who are still in disbelief have also shared their reactions with the media.

Locals perplexed in the aftermath of the attack

Rockaway Beach residents remain perplexed in the aftermath of the shark attack. The existence of a shark in the Rockaway Beach waters is extremely rare since the water lacks a healthy environment and is primarily barren. According to a local, there aren’t generally any major fish species around here; it’s a wide desert under the seas with little to no ecological variety. Colin Smith, a local from Broadway who was shocked by this news, told the media, “Finding out about the shark bite That blew my mind.” Further, a local surfer who tackles the swells of Rockaway Beach couldn’t believe someone could be attacked by such a gnarly beast at this beach.

In these responses, the City Parks Department released a statement assuring the local New Yorkers that shark bites on this beach are very rare. Further, the authorities, who are continuously monitoring the area in case of sharks spotted in the water, will clear the area to avoid any further incidents in the future. They also hope for a full recovery for the injured swimmer.
