Katie Ledecky has dominated the events she competes in since she first began competing in prominent global meets. Now, at 25, she continues her winning streak even at the FINA World Championships in Budapest this year.

Earlier at the meet, the G.O.A.T. bagged gold in the 400m and the 1500m free events. Naturally, the crowd fixed their eyes on the swimmer during the 800m freestyle, and the three-time Olympian did not disappoint.

Katie Ledecky makes a record win at the 19th FINA World Championships

People who’re aware of the feats of the swimmer know that Ledecky excels in distance events. Moreover, the athlete has won the 800m event for the past four consecutive Worlds.

Therefore, she was hailed as a favorite for the event even before the meet commenced. And the athlete managed to deliver on everyone’s expectations by winning the event on June 24.

It marked Ledecky’s fifth consecutive win at an event at the FINA World Championships. With this, she has achieved a feat that even the most decorated Olympian, Michael Phelps, could not accomplish at any of his meets.

During the event, Ledecky clocked in at 8:08.04 to clinch the gold. Australian swimmer Kiah Melverton secured the second position with a time of 8:18.77. Simona Quadarella from Italy came third after completing the event in 8:19.00.

 

Ledecky’s compatriot Leah Smith also competed in the event. However, she came fourth with a time of 8:20.04, trailing by more than 1 second behind Quadarella.

Following the victory, Kyle Sockwell tweeted about the moment. The tweet read, “No one in history had won 5 consecutive titles in the same event at the World Swimming Championships until Katie Ledecky made it 5 in a row today in the 800 freestyle.

She is without a doubt in my mind the greatest freestyler of all time,” the tweet continued.

Ledecky’s win in the 800m free marked her 19th individual medal at the World Championships since she first competed in 2013. It makes her the female swimmer with the most medals at the meet.

Interestingly, most of Ledecky’s medals that she’s bagged at the Worlds are gold. Of the 19 medals won during her brilliant competitive career, only two are silver.
