But all was not good in Phelps’s career; there were some dark phases. Michael had a tough time dealing with his rehab. Perhaps that was the most infamous event of his career, also probably the most troublesome phase of his life.
The Privacy problems Michael Phelps faced and the Infamous Bong Incident
In an old interview with Joe Buck, Olympian Michael Phelps narrates the ordeal he had to endure. Recounting the time of his rehab days, Phelps reveals how a picture of him holding a bong turned his life upside down. The picture came three months after his historic 8-gold medal performance in the Beijing Olympics.
Speaking about the picture leak, Phelps says, “There were six people in that house, and one person that I didn’t really know is the one [who took the picture]. I know who it is. I know his name. What can I do?” When asked why he did not take any legal course toward the person, Michael answered, “That kid’s gotta look at himself in the mirror every day. Karma’s a b****.”
Michael was well aware that he had messed up. Speaking about the very little privacy that he gets to enjoy, Michael added, “I put myself in that position. And somebody took a picture of me. The thing for me is that I understand — doing what I’ve done — I’ve essentially written away privacy.”
Phelps had his initial hurdles, but none could stop him from achieving the heights. With more than two-long decades of swimming, there are multiple feats of Michael that remain unbreakable to date.
