When Michael Phelps started swimming, he couldn’t have fathomed in his wildest dreams about what lay at the end of this journey. Very rarely do people figure out their purpose and capability early in life. Hence, the dream that Phelps saw as an 18-year-old was nothing but a drop compared to his ocean-wide success. Perhaps, at the moment, the swimming legend had no idea what an extraordinary future awaited him.

28 Olympic medals, 39 world records, and the title of the most decorated Olympian ever; Michael Phelps is indeed greatness personified. He is a living example of when hard work and dedication meet talent, nothing can stop a person from becoming the best.
What did Michael Phelps dream of going into the 2004 Olympics?
In a resurfaced interview, Phelps is seen talking about winning an Olympic gold like the other athletes. He said, “Not many people in the US, or in the world for that can say they are an Olympic gold medalist. So coming back with one gold medal, obviously, I’ll be completely happy.”
The swimming legend added, “One gold medal is all I want. You are a more recognizable, notable person with the gold medal. So one gold medal is my goal.”
If only he would have known at the time that he would not stop at one or five or even ten Olympic gold medals. Instead, he wanted to be the best, and that is who he became.
Bowman recognized Phelps’ greatness way before he did
While the swimming legend was eyeing just one gold medal, coach Bob Bowman knew the kid had a bright future. He said, “I think he has a lot to forward to.” Well, clearly, major credit for Phelps’ success goes to his coach because he believed in him even before he could believe in himself. Bowman has played a role of a guide and a father figure in his life, and he probably understands the swimming legend better than anyone else.
