Phelps followed his coach and joined Michigan for four years. There he was also the volunteer assistant of the coach.
In 2008, when Bowman came back to Baltimore and became the CEO of North Baltimore Aquatic Club, just like old times, Phelps returned to Baltimore to follow the steps of his coach. In 2015, Michael moved to Arizona with Bob Bowman, when Bowman became coach at Arizona State University.
