The 28-time Olympic medalist passionately spoke about pursuing a career in golf after he initially retired from competitive swimming in 2012 following the London Olympics. Moreover, he debuted at The Haney Project in 2012 with a 26-handicap.

Phelps cut his golf career short after officially announcing his return to swimming in April 2014 at the pre-meet press conference of Arena Grand Prix, Mesa. However, his return to the sport was short-lived as he intended to return only for a final Olympic Games in Rio.
Therefore, the Baltimore Bullet returned to try his hand at golf following his final retirement in 2016. And the athlete has been pursuing the sport passionately ever since. Additionally, Phelps spends a considerable amount of time practicing golf. It is evident from the wear on his irons.
Practice is necessary to become proficient in any field. Therefore, the Flying Fish, too, has come a long way in the sport. Golf Digest put him at a handicap of 10.5 in 2020. It is a significant improvement from his 26-handicap eight years before.

Presently, Phelps is competing at the Icons Series, a Presidents Cup-style two-day event. The event will pit 12 active and former athletes from the US against their global opponents between June 30 and July 1.
