Thomas is the first transgender woman to win the 500-yard freestyle competition. But, the decision to let her participate has come with severe backlash. After she won the event, fans booed her while she stood on the podium. Many people have voiced out how she had an unfair advantage over other swimmers in the division. However, she is focused on winning and shutting down all the naysayers.

“I try to ignore it as much as I can. I try to focus on my swimming, what I need to do to get ready for my races. And just try to block out everything else,” said Thomas.
