On July 4, around 4.30 pm, while enjoying the water at the serene Bolton Park, Paprin, a twenty-year-old boy, got caught in a gushing rapid between the waterfalls of Bolton Pothole. Paprin had jumped from a cliff into the middle of the fatal pothole, where the current was so strong that it created a whirlpool. Many people present near the park tried to save the boy as they pulled him out of the water. Unresponsive Samuel Paprin was then immediately taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center, situated in Burlington, where he was unfortunately declared dead.

According to the locals present at such horrible incidents, if the people were made aware of the danger of Bolton Potholes, these incidents could have been prevented. In an interview with vt digger, a fire department official stated, “It’s a community responsibility. I mean, Vermont is such a small community. We need to all come together to find the best solutions and work together to implement them.” The Bolton Potholes have gained the reputation of being one of the most dangerous swimming locations in Vermont.

Last year in May the same fate was faced by a 21-year-old swimmer. Cody Surprise a Burlington-based swimmer who had jumped into the Bolton Pothole did not make it back. Later rescued by the fire department of Vermont the 21-year-old Cody was sadly declared dead at the scene. Drowning incidents have been increasing vastly in the past year. But what makes these potholes so dangerous?

Dangers of Bolton Potholes

According to the two officials at the fire department, Mark Klonicke and Adam Wood, factors that make these potholes dangerous include highly oxygenated water, which makes floating impossible, high temperatures, and heavy rain. The government has installed safety boards at the park and danger signs in the most accident-prone areas. However, according to Klonicke, there should be an improved version of updating the people at the park, especially after heavy rainfall, when the Bolton Potholes are the most dangerous.
