An infant from Belfast, Corey Aughey recently lost his life after he wandered off from his parents. The Aughey family was holidaying in Majorca, Balearic Islands when the incident took place. Hours after they landed at the resort, the father went in for a nap while his mother and siblings were unaware of his whereabouts.?

In a recent article by Belfast Live, the story of the heart-wrenching mishap was shed light on. The 6-year-old kid got separated from his parents in search of free coke at the resort and was later found unconscious in the swimming pool. Here?s what happened.?

The Aughey family?s unfortunate loss

According to the sources, the Belfast family reached the resort for their summer vacation on Thursday. After Corey and his siblings had a blast in the pool, he went off to grab a drink. Moments later, he was retrieved from the pool, drowning, while a man offered CPR. This helped the kid regain a pulse and he was immediately rushed to the hospital. “We were only there around three hours. He would have been running over to the wee drink machine? he thought it was great he could get free Coke,? his father, Colin revealed.?

Soon, an ambulance transported him to the other side of the island where the hospital was located. The following days seemed hopeful as Corey?s health got better. However, on the third day, the doctors announced that there was no sign of brain activity in the child. Moments later, Corey passed away. His father recalled, “Corey was a great wee child. The best way to describe him would be a bundle of energy.?

Moreover, the family flew back home to Belfast on the same day. Later on, a charity in the name of Corey was set up, via GoFundMe page. People in the Ballysillan neighborhood reached out to the family offering their support and condolences. “They came up with flowers, and bingo clubs were hosting events for us. There was a lot of money raised for us, through a Go Fund Me page, while we were still over there. We want to now give back, through a charity,? Colin added. In a unique initiative, swimming legend, Michael Phelps once introduced a measure to prevent kids from such drowning risks.?

In 2019, the Olympian once talked about his initiative to spread awareness of water safety. Consequently, after he bagged gold and various endorsements at the 2008 Olympics, he invested a massive capital into the Michael Phelps Foundation that looked to prevent the second leading cause of death for children, that is, drowning.?

?We know how fast a kid can drown. When I started the [Michael Phelps Foundation]? in 2008, I wanted to go right back into teaching the importance of water safety,? Phelps said in the interview. Additionally, it is also the first thing he taught his own kids.?
