Drew Brees is one of the most popular NFL stars in history and established his dominance as a quarterback. The New Orleans Saints quarterback has experimented with several other sports, with football being his favorite. However, out of all sports, surfing was a big challenge for him. But things turned out to be a little different when he got on the board with the legend of the sport, Kelly Slater. 

In 2018, as a part of NFL 360’s Something About Surfing, Breesus went to brush up on his skills at World Champion surfer Kelly Slater’s surf ranch in California. However, little did he know that he was going to be wiped out a lot of times before perfecting his surfing dynamics!

Drew Brees had a tough time balancing on the surfboard

NFL Network posted a video in 2018 describing Hurricane Drew’s visit to Kelly Slater’s Ranch where both practiced surfing. Drew Brees admitted that it was his first time visiting an artificial surface branch. Both superstars had prior experience surfing together. Kelly and Drew were looking forward to this long-due meeting.

Kelly kicked off the practices with the shortest waves in the ranch to judge Drew’s level. Everyone expected Drew to easily maintain the balance as he had prior experience. However, things turned out to be very difficult for Drew as he kept falling off the board. “He fell on 8 or 10 waves back to back to back,” said Kelly Slater.

The waves were giving a tough time to the NFL star. Drew Brees compared surfing with taking rough hits on the football field. He said, “It’s equivalent on the football field when you just get hit after hit after hit”. However, the 43-year-old soon realized that he needs to change his strategy to get good results. “You get rolled a couple of those times out there, and then you realize, alright, I better make some adjustments here”, he admitted.

Drew’s comeback amazed Kelly Slater

Drew Brees proved why he is known for his comebacks. Moreover, Kelly suggested Brees switch to a smaller surfboard for better maneuvering which did the trick. Even, the surfing legend was astounded seeing Drew’s performance. “We went from very beginner level with Drew, maybe up to like six months of learning within one day” Kelly Slater admitted. Drew continued to bounce back and used his athletic mind to the fullest. He patiently waited for the one moment and made the best use when it came.

Both Kelly and Drew have a great understanding of each other. In fact, their friendship was visible in the conversation before entering the ranch as well as at the end when Drew came out victorious. With an experience as unique as this, Brees felt “like a completely different person”!
