With his bag full of surprises, Santa Claus comes in the darkness of night in a flying sleigh guided by a troop of reindeers. While Christmas has come and gone, it seems like the saint from the north pole still has some unfinished business. But this time, Santa came on a surfboard in the brightness of the day. John Fulton, a 62-year-old surfer, a.k.a Surfing Santa recently slipped on his red and white attire and a big white beard to paddle in the coldness of the Niagara river.

Fulton has been performing this surfing ritual since 1985 to raise monetary donations for the ones in need. This year, Fulton marks his 39th voyage on the Niagara in the chilly climatic conditions. Let’s find out what noble cause did the Canadian Santa bring this time.

As per the report of CHCH-DT, the surfer collaborated with the charitable trust called Coldest Night of the Year. The non-profit organization helps people who are experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness with clothes, food, and money. In order to raise awareness, Surfing Santa has paddled two miles around the Lake Erie of the Niagara river despite the frosty weather.

Expressing his heartfelt message, Fulton stated, “I carried this tradition for 38 years really for one reason and one reason only is to draw attention to the plight of really the less fortunate”. He further added, “it’s just letting people know that we are all vulnerable and we have to think about the vulnerable”.

Interestingly, Surfing Santa’s message of kindness grabbed the attention of many people. As per the statistics of the Coldest Night of the Year, a total of $150,000 has been raised for those who are homeless. Moreover, Fulton’s donation spree will accept clothing and other monetary forms of donations until the end of March.

Last year, Fulton completed a 3-mile trek around the lake in the subzero air temperatures. In 2022, the surfer joined forces with the Start Me Up foundation to help those who were distraught by hunger and homelessness. From collecting socks and mittens to donating toiletries and food, the Surfing Santa has gifted every basic necessity to people who were in dire need of such resources.
