Jamie O’Brien was born to surf. He grew up surfing the Banzai pipeline, aka, some of the most notorious waves on the planet. At 6 years old O’Brien started competing locally in North Shore, Hawaii, and continued competing till his twenties, becoming one of the youngest surfers to win Pipeline Masters.

O’Brien’s father was a lifeguard, so the young surfer had ample opportunity to tag along with his father and practice on his dad’s beach. O’Brien’s love for surfing turned him into an adventurer, and now he has made it his mission to try out waves in each and every part of the world.

In recent days, O’Brien has posted various videos on his social media accounts showing him, and his companions, trying out wave pools all across the country. It was not long ago that he had ventured to Kelly Slater’s awesome surf pool. And now, he has found another destination that fascinated him enough to get on the road to go try it. So off he went, with his friends, and his surfboards, to try out the wave pool at the Palm Springs Surf Club.

O’Brien posted a video of the entire experience on his Facebook page. At the beginning of the video, he said, “Today we are going to show you a little bit of behind-the-scenes, show you what the park looks like. It is actually old wet and wild, which is really cool. And we’re like in the middle of nowhere again. I love this.” His excitement for the adventure he had embarked on was palpable. Jamie O’Brien added, “I love venturing on the road and just loading this thing up full of boards and just sending it down the road and seeing where we end up.”

Upon reaching the venue, and seeing the waves created by the surf pool in action, O’Brien was grinning like a kid at a candy store. He exclaimed, “They got some steep boys out here in Palm Springs.” His review of the wave pool was surprising, to say the least. Did the wave pool impress the Hawaiin so much, that he now thinks it’s better than Slater’s wave pool?

Better than Kelly Slater’s wave pool?

Jamie O’Brien has surfed in numerous wave pools, some notable ones being the BSR Waco Surf, and of of course the most popular, Kelly Slater’s wave pool. But staggering is the fact, that this old Wet n’ Wild converted wave pool impressed O’Brien. O’Brien said, “I’ve surfed BSR, I’ve surfed Kelly’s pool. And Kelly’s pool is pretty sick and BSR is insane, but this is beautifully insane.” The reason for his praise was the quality of waves that this particular wave pool had the ability to produce.

O’Brien added, “They’re perfect rights. Draining barrels. It feels like the real deal like you’re locked in and you’re like, Oh my God, I’m just getting this barrel in the middle of Palm Springs. It’s like, it’s literally like, I can’t even really explain the feeling, but this is insane.” According to Palm Beach Surf Club’s official website, this wave pool uses Surf Loch technology to pump out different kinds of waves. The surf club’s site was earlier a popular Palm Springs Wet n’ Wild which has been operational in the desert since 1986.
