With its high tides and big barrels, New Smyrna Beach has attracted many surfers every summer. However, the beach has also gained a reputation for being frequented by gnarly sharks, swimming and looking for prey. These sharks are mostly found along the coastline of the beach, where many surfers look forward to riding the swells. Unfortunately, while riding the waves, surfers can inadvertently provoke these beasts to attack.

Last month, a 21-year-old college student was bitten by a shark while surfing off the New Smyrna Beach. This beach is located in Florida’s Volusia County, which is known as the ‘Shark Bite Capital of the World.’ Recently, another surfing tragedy at the beach has left the surfing community aghast. A local surfer was attacked by a shark.

Recently, another tragedy struck the Florida beach, which is known to have witnessed several shark encounters. A passionate surfer fell prey to a predator at New Smyrna Beach. The shark attack victim, identified as Brandon Boncore, had gone surfing in the shark-infested waters despite knowing the risks. Boncore, who has relished riding the massive waves of Florida’s waters, accidentally encountered the shark during his final waves of the day. A YouTube video was shared by ABC News with the caption “Florida surfer details shark encounter and recovery.” In the video, the surfing prodigy stated, “I felt something kind of clamp on my leg. I took my right leg and just kicked it off me.” After reaching the shore, Boncore was immediately taken to the hospital where he underwent a surgery.

Interestingly, this is not the first time the surfer has encountered a shark. He revealed in the video, “I might see four or five sharks each day.” Furthermore, Boncore found himself under attack just a few weeks after his friend Chris Pospisil was also attacked while surfing in the same area. However, the UFC student’s condition was considerably more severe than Boncore’s.

Chris Pospisil’s gruesome attack

Last month, on July 20, Chris Pospisil was attacked by a shark at the New Smyrna Beach. The shark pulled the right leg of the University of Central Florida student underwater while they were surfing. The 21-year-old later told the media, “I saw my foot in its mouth, and I saw its teeth.” Pospisil suffered serious injuries and had to undergo a four-hour-long surgery. According to his doctor, the surfer lost a significant amount of blood and damaged seven muscle tendons. Remarkably, even the shattered tooth of the gnarly beast was found embedded in Pospisil’s bone. Due to this injury, the surfer will be unable to stand on his feet for at least six months.
