On 14th May, California’s Humboldt County saw an unprecedented surfing mishap on one of its most popular beaches. A 25-year-old nursing student was catching waves on Sunday morning when she got off-kilter from her surfboard and ended up losing her life in the process.

Martina Marie Scarfia, a 25-year-old woman surfer, was paddling at Moonstone Beach with her elder sister. However, their surfing spree ended in a rather unfortunate way after a large barrel came in and drowned Scarfia. But how did the horrific incident fold out for the young surfer?

A surfing spree turned into a mishap

Martina Marie Scarfia and her sister Asia Autumn Scarfia-Ward were surfing at Moonstone Beach on Sunday. However, while paddling in the sea, the 25-year-old lost her balance and fell from her surfboard. Following this, Scarfia-Ward tried extricating her younger sibling from drowning, but her attempts went in vain.

However, by afternoon, fellow beachgoers helped Scarfia-Ward to bring the 25-year-old’s unconscious body to the shore. The paramedics performed resuscitation before the emergency services came in. The young surfer was then airlifted and transferred to the nearby hospital. However, as per the report of the Lost Coast Outpost, the nursing graduate was later pronounced deceased by the medical authorities.

The cause of her demise is not revealed yet, as the autopsy report is still under investigation. Nonetheless, just the day before the horrid incident folded out for the surfer, she was celebrating a career milestone.

Martina reached a career landmark the day before her unfortunate demise

On 13th May 2023, Scarfia graduated with a degree in nursing from the College of the Redwoods in Eureka California. The following day she went to Humboldt County, 300 miles northwest of Sacramento for catching some big barrels. However, her happiness of graduating was short-lived, as her surfing trip brought a fateful ending for the surfer. Upon reaching the career landmark, her sister expressed her sincere eulogies for her sister.

Scarfia-Ward wrote on her social media handle, “I am so proud of everything she has done and the amazing person she has become”. She further added, “We celebrated as a family and paddled out together one last time until paradise”. The surfing spree of 25-year-old Martina Marie Scarfia indeed ended in the most unfortunate way.
