Laird Hamilton has certainly mastered the big waves of the sea, doing it so effortlessly that one might think it’s a piece of cake. However, everyone knows it’s far from that. There is one thing that even the big wave surfer has a hard time understanding. It’s understanding what goes on in the minds of his teenage daughters.

The surfer finds it hard to figure out the right ways of parenting or how to get through to the kids these days. In one of his interviews, Laird shared about the difficulties of raising kids in a complex world where the kids are under constant social pressure.
Laird Hamilton talks about his role in his family
In 2020, Laird Hamilton joined Rich Roll on the “Rich Roll Podcast.” In the episode titled, “Laird Hamilton’s Relentless Pursuit of the Edge,” the two athletes discussed a diverse range of topics. These topics ranged from his professional life to his private life. At one point, Laird was asked what life was like being the only man in the house. For the unversed, Laird’s immediate family consists of his wife and three daughters.
Answering the question, Hamilton talked about his position in the family. “My position is kinda like being the post in the house. Like a giant post that holds the roof up. You just have to be there. You don’t move, you hold the roof up so the roof doesn’t fall down, and that’s your position,” said the surfing champ. He further spoke about the complexities of raising kids, especially daughters, in the current time. Hamilton spoke about the constant social pressure kids these days are under, and how it affects their day-to-day behavior and choices.
Laird further added that when he thinks about how he is doing it, he has no answer for it. He added, “The only thing I know is that I don’t know anything.” Talking about his teenage daughters, the surfer shared that his children detest surfing. “My daughters hate the beach, they hate surfing,” said Laird Hamilton.
All about Hamilton’s family
Laird Hamilton was born Laird John Zerfas. Laird’s biological father left the family when he was just a year old. A few years later, his mother married surfer Bill Hamilton, and Laird took his stepfather’s last name.

In 1992, Hamilton married the big wave surfer Maria Souza. However, the union didn’t last long, and the couple parted ways three years later in 1995. Laird shares a daughter with his first wife. In 1997, Laird gave marriage a second chance and tied the knot with volleyball player and television personality Gabrielle Reece.
