Surfing is the sport of thrill and excitement until the dangers lurking beneath the turquoise water impose challenges on the sea pursuers. From vicious shark attacks and whetted reefs to ferocious wipeouts, the salty reverie harbors every peril within its infinity. Likewise, in 2015, the Hawaiian surfer, Tyler Larronde, fell prey to a life-threatening barrel wipeout while surfing one of the most notorious waves of Hawaiian waters – the Jaws wave of Pe’ahi.

Tyler Larronde is a Maui-based surfer who was born and brought up near the ocean. So, it goes without saying that his love for the water is inherent. He paddled on some of the most dangerous ocean barrels, including the Billabong Pipeline, with absolute finesse. However, while chasing Jaws at Pe’ahi in 2015, the barrel wipeout took the surfer by surprise and lacerated him brutally.

Tyler Larronde was having a surge of adrenaline rush while paddling toward the pinnacle of Jaws. Though he reached the wave crest with his commendable flair, he got stuck in the midst of the barrel while making his way toward the trough. He fell head-first and ended up striking his knee with his surfboard. In the 2016 interview with Surfline, Larronde described his injuries and stated, “it’s straight on me and flipped my board over I guess, and my knee came down and boom. My knee went straight through the board”.

He further said, “Another explosion happened, and like boom and it just ripped it out. Rip my leg out of the board”. More so, his legs got swollen, following the wipeout and he was left with nothing but pain to endure. “I feel my leg instantly swell up and I felt cuts all over it and gashes…my leg was like all messed up. I couldn’t move it or nothing”, added the surfer. Things went further downhill when Larronde got stuck under the barrel and “all the air got knocked out of his lungs”. What came next is the unprecedented sight of a surfing fiasco and a plea for help.

After getting stuck in the wipeout, the surfer’s limbs got wounded ferociously and he stuck under the wave for an extended period of time. “I got slammed and my leash is pulling on my leg and I thought my leg was just fully broken but then I see jet skis coming off and I started screaming help! help! help!”. However, another wave barrel came in, and hit the surfer again, pushing him down further into the sea. But did he make it safely to the shore?

Although Larronde was brutally bruised, he managed to wash off with the wave channel and ended up reaching the rocks lined just before the shoreline. He was then extricated by his father and his other surfer companions. Following this, he was taken to the hospital for further treatment. To everyone’s relief, no major fractures were rendered to the surfer’s limbs. However, he did get a stretched ligament and some gashes on his body. Though he made it safely to the banks, Pe’ahi’s Jaws took a major toll on his physical strength. However, the Hawaiian surfer recovered quickly and got back to his beloved arena to once again trounce the big wave barrels.
