A chilling video of a shark trying to devour a man while surfing alarmed fans. Posted on the TikTok account The Dippy Detectorists, the video gave a frightening glimpse of a massive white shark moving toward a surfer. With the surfer cresting fearlessly on the waves, the video indicated that the man on the surfboard was unaware of the shark following him. It showcased how other surfers were also surfing with him when the shark attacked.

The video depicted the surfer riding on a huge tidal wave in the waters at lightning speed. Judging the wave perfectly, the surfer increased his speed, rose above the wave, and made a smooth landing.
Later, the video presenter described, “A shark is charging up the wave straight at him. It opens its poisonous jaws and tries to swallow him whole.” Luckily, the shark’s jaws missed the surfer narrowly, due to his tremendous speed.
This was not the only time when a white shark has almost got hold of a surfer. In 2015, a three-time surfing champion was attacked by a deadly shark. Remembering the deadly encounter in a 2018 interview, the surfing champion held nothing back.

Fanning gave an interview to 60 Minutes Australia which was broadcasted on YouTube on October 17, 2018. Recounting the shark encounter, the three-time ASP World Champion stated, “My board was sideways and the shark just came like that.” This took place when Fanning was participating in a World Surf League competition, the J-Bay Open, in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.
In fact, the surfer could see the shark’s main dorsal and side fins. At this critical juncture, the Penrith-born surfer saved himself by hitting the shark hard. Later, he swam away from the shark and was brought ashore by a rescue boat in the area. The close shave became widely popular due to the viral video, with even surfing legend Kelly Slater commenting on it.

The two encounters indicate how surfing is an unpredictable and risky sport where sea dwellers can launch an attack at any moment. Shark attacks have become a regular occurrence and mitigating such risks requires intense discussions among the authorities.
