New Smyrna Beach is one of the most popular spots for surfing, swimming, or family outing. It’s crystal blue water and sandy beaches make it ideal for surfing. However, the destination is not perfect in all aspects because of its numerous notorious shark attack reports. From 1882 to 2020, more than 300 shark attacks are confirmed in Volusia County, as per the reports of the International Shark Attack file.

New Smyrna Beach city is also known as ‘the shark capital’ for its infamous accidents. Recently, one more horrifying shark attack incident was reported in the area when a man was surfing in the ocean and faced an attack. This recent attack made it the third shark attack in just the past couple of weeks. The brutal shark attack caused him some severe foot injuries for which he is currently recovering in a hospital.

On Monday morning 31st of July, a man was surfing in the ocean when he was attacked by an aggressive shark. And with the help of a drone camera, the shark was seen again floating in the area shortly after the attack. Fox 35 spoke with the victim, Brandon Boncore, and shared some details of the horrifying mishap.

Brandon said he is not totally bugged, rather he was lucky in the event because it could have been worse. Everything was going very well on the day until he began to ride the last surfing wave of the day when the shark attacked him.

Brandon said to Fox 35, “The shark bit me right on the foot. Something clamped onto me. I knew it was a shark right away, but it was just a lot of pressure that kind of clamped on my foot. Took my right foot, kicked it away.” After this daring faceoff with the shark, he got on the board and started to paddle fast to the shore, but since he was attacked, he could not paddle with his thorough energy. Boncore tried to wave someone down and shortly after that, he was assisted by the other surfers and the bystanders on the beach. He is now under treatment in the hospital where he defined himself lucky.

The surfing prodigy called himself fortunate

The surfer was rushed to the nearby hospital where he went through surgery. There was a shark tooth stuck in his bone that was removed however, his major tendons and arteries are not intact. He said, one of his friend’s relations went through a similar accident last week, but his condition was way worse than Brandon Boncore. Hence, he considers himself lucky to survive and not sustain that many injuries. The last surfing shark attack victim, Chris Pospisil, also surfed in the same area and got worse injuries than Brandon, but just the timing of the two surfers varied. Boncore expressed the luck of nearly escaping the worse, he said, “could have happened to me.”

Brandon Boncore opened up about the frequent shark attack incidents in New Smyrna Beach saying that the best we can do is keep our distance. Because it’s an ocean, it is meant for aquatic animals and their shelter. However, Boncore is not discomforted seeing his blood on the board and he will be surfing soon and rocking Smyrna Beach.
