Surfing is a popular sport all around the world. The universal likability of surfing ensures that hundreds and thousands of people flock to the beaches with the goal to catch some phenomenal waves and chill throughout the day. Certain destinations become famous for their astounding waves, thus attracting an enormous crowd. This particular location in Australia falls in this category.

The Gold Coast is absolutely golden when it comes to surfing. A metropolitan region located to the south of Brisbane, the city is sea-adjacent. It is known worldwide for its surfing spots, long strips of sandy beaches, and elaborate system of inland canals and waterways. The Gold Coast is notoriously crowded as a rule, but has it now become the sister of the world’s most crowded wave?

Is Superbank now the world’s most crowded surfing spot?

Footage has been circulating on YouTube which shows clips of Greenmount to Kirra on the Gold Coast, and the waves are literally flooded with people. There are multiple people attempting to ride the same waves. The waves have been cracking recently on the Superbank, which is the region from Snapper Rocks, to Greenmount, to Kirra. These attract ginormous crowds on any given day, but May 16 saw crowds more humongous than any other day.

Kirra is often referred to as Australia’s ‘spiritual home of surfing’ and is known to produce some high-quality barrel waves. The video referred to above showed many surfers attempting to ride these legendary barrels, and only some of them actually succeeded. Kirra Point can thrill experienced surfers with its big swell and world-class break, but that is not the only attraction in the area. Kirra Surf Life Saving Club, established on the Gold Coast in 1916, is a favorite among the locals and is a perfect spot for a quick drink with the winds in one’s hair and the view of the entire beach laid out front.

The photogenic Kirra Shelter Shed is also located nearby, which gives a bird’s eye view of the beach break, and is perfect for clicking some fantastic shots of the waves, the sea, and maybe even the sunset. The Shed also works as a perfect viewing point, whether it is wave-watching that one wants to indulge in, or just watching the surfers take on the famous waves of Kirra Beach. While these attractions are historical, the waves are still considered the main magnet.

Netizens astounded at the crowded barrel waves of Kirra

When the video of the crowded waves started circulating, people were astonished at the number of people trying to ride the same waves. Someone commented on the video saying, “Great video. It could also be called “Survival of the Fittest”!” Another surfing enthusiast nixed the idea of these waves being the most crowded with the reason, “Nah Pipeline is the most crowded! These guys are going for multiple waves, whereas it’s usually the same amount of guys going for one wave at Pipe.”

Someone else enthusiastically described surfing at the Gold Coast, and commented, “Great burn right from when I pushed play! That’s what surfing the Goldie is all about!” Another person explained the reason for the astronomical number of people present at the surfing location, and wrote, “I would say it’s definitely one of the most ample brakes, which is why there are so many people there.” Whatever the reason, it sure looks crammed in the waves at the Superbank these days.
